Knife

A knife is not absolutely necessary but it may solve problems in fire lighting or shelter building in a fraction of the time and effort required in bare-handed survival. If you do not normally carry a good sturdy non-folding knife, then include one in your kit. If you are trained in the use of an appropriate knife, it may be the only tool you need to get by in winter or summer. If you do not know how to use a knife safely and effectively, it may be the cause of a survival situation, or it may make it much worse.

A good knife must be neither too small or too big. The handle should fit comfortably in the hand and the blade be no longer than the palm. If it is carbon steel it can be used as a back-up for fire lighting. The steel should be of a quality that allows shaving sharpness being maintained with commonly available, inexpensive sharpening stones. The ideal knife is almost indestructible. You should be able to drive it into a tree and stand on the handle without bending or breaking it.
